Voting and abuse prevention
Catna uses a random, signed browser identifier stored in a cookie to help prevent duplicate voting and keep the Judge experience working correctly. Votes may also be associated with a keyed, one-way fingerprint derived from the network address used to vote. The raw network address is not stored with the vote.
Catna also records which names have been shown to a browser identifier so the Judge can avoid immediate repeats. Votes and identifiers needed to preserve voting integrity may be retained for as long as the associated name or cat remains part of Catna. Viewed-name records remain private and automatically expire one year after the name was shown. They may be cleared sooner when a Judge selection cycle resets, when the associated name is removed, or through administrative cleanup.
First-party analytics
Catna records limited first-party product events to understand whether the site is working well. These may include page visits, successful or rejected votes, next-name actions, shares, submissions, Daily Catna participation, errors, and request timing.
A random identifier limited to the browser tab's session may accompany these events. Analytics events do not contain raw IP addresses, advertising identifiers, or a permanent analytics profile. Analytics event records automatically expire after 90 days.
Submissions
Name suggestions contain the proposed name and any optional context you provide. Real-cat submissions may also contain one photo and an optional short description or story.
Submissions remain private while awaiting moderation. Approved names may become public. Approved cat photos and stories may become public as part of the submitted Catna page and related Catna features.
Unreviewed submissions and their processed photos are automatically deleted after 90 days. Rejected photos are deleted during moderation. Rejected and removed submission records, including moderation notes and keyed network fingerprints, automatically expire after one year. Approved public content and its private moderation record may remain for as long as the content remains part of Catna.
Do not submit sensitive personal information, photos you do not have permission to share, or images primarily depicting other people. In particular, do not submit images primarily depicting minors.
Images
Uploaded images are decoded, validated, resized, converted to WebP, and stored under randomized filenames. This processing is intended to remove ordinary embedded metadata. Original uploaded files are not retained after processing. Pending images are accessible only to authorized moderators. Removing an approved real-cat submission deletes its processed public image.
Local browser data
Theme preference, up to 100 recent judgments, up to 50 favorites, personal voting statistics, and up to 400 Daily Catna completion dates are stored locally in your browser.
This local history is not uploaded to Catna as a personal profile and can be cleared from the Yours page or through your browser's storage controls.
Shared links
Shared links may contain a simple ref=share marker so Catna can measure aggregate
visits resulting from sharing. The marker is not a visitor identifier and is not used to build
a personal profile.
Operational logs
Catna keeps operational logs needed to run and protect the service. These may include request paths, response status codes, timing information, request IDs, security events, and application errors. Sensitive values such as credentials, cookies, tokens, and database connection strings are redacted from structured logs.
Service providers
Hosting, database, storage, networking, and other infrastructure providers may process technical connection data while providing services to Catna. They process that information according to their own service terms and privacy practices and, where applicable, on Catna's behalf to operate the service.
Moderation records and generated previews
Private moderation audit events contain limited action and target details and automatically expire after one year, independently of submission records. They exclude photos, network addresses, keyed fingerprints, credentials, and free-form moderation notes. Generated social preview images are a cache: they may be regenerated and are invalidated when their associated public content is removed.
What “anonymous” means here
Catna does not know your account identity because normal visitors do not have accounts. However, ordinary internet connections still expose technical information to network operators, hosting providers, and Catna's infrastructure, and Catna uses pseudonymous identifiers for voting integrity and abuse prevention.
Catna is designed to be anonymous-first. It is not a guarantee of anonymity or untraceability.
Removal and privacy requests
If you submitted content and want it reviewed or removed, or if you have a privacy question, contact [email protected]. Include enough information to identify the relevant submission or page, but do not send sensitive personal information unless it is necessary to handle the request.
Changes to this policy
Catna may update this policy as the service changes. Material changes will be reflected on this page along with an updated revision date.
